The Atlantic just published this article explaining how quickly the production of plastic is increasing. It is increasing so fast, half of all the plastic on earth today was made in the last 13 years. As if that wasn't terrifying enough, only 9 percent of the total of 8,300 million metric tons of plastic has been recycled. The production of plastic is tied to the rise of oil and gas, since oil is easy and cheap to make into plastic. Single use plastic packaging is now the largest plastic market, and it keeps getting cheaper, which encourages more production. What can we do? Although the article offers no answers, it seems we should all be more conscious of our plastic consumption and make an effort to recycle.
