As part of our project at the Lower East Side Ecology Center in Manhattan, W has been working with NYC Parks and Biohabitats to develop a compost leachate treatment system. In the fall of last year, Biohabitats developed a prototype of the effluent filter system on site at the Center to test the effectiveness of the system design. Planted vermiculture filters were constructed to determine the number of gallons per day the system could treat in order to meet water quality requirements. The pilot project found that the optimal system size is 10 planted cell filters. We are looking forward to building this system that will improve the operations and environmental impact of the center!
