Janet Echelman‘s new site-specific artwork for the St. Petersburg Pier Approach is now installed! The monumental soft sculpture, ‘Bending Arc,’ billows above the city’s waterfront pier and the wind creates a constantly changing shape at any given moment. The work will be 76 feet at its highest point, 428 feet wide at its widest and will require 84 miles of twine and more than a million knots. Around it, there may be hammocks so people can experience the sculpture as it sways in the wind and light. W Architecture & Landscape Architecture worked with Echelman during the design of the Pier Approach to site the sculpture and design the landscape beneath. The expansive lawn will allow users to experience the sculpture and the waterfront from many viewpoints. ‘Bending Arc’ is Echelman’s largest permanent piece to date.
