Three dolphins swimming in the East River were spotted from Greenpoint, Brooklyn yesterday. The sighting was very close to our Edge park in Williamsburg! You can see more photos and videos here.
Though whales and sharks have been seen in NYC waters before, dolphins are somewhat rare. According to the website iNaturalist, for self-recording observations, there have been other sightings of bottlenose dolphins from Brooklyn and Long Island in the past few years.
The NY DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) states that: “Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, pilot whales, and Risso’s dolphins can often be seen off the south shore of Long Island. Sightings of bottlenose dolphins are the most common since they live closer to shore in coastal waters like harbors and bays. The majority of dolphin sightings occur in the warm summer months when the water is productive.”
