On September 1st, Barbara and Steven Handel gave a lecture for the New Directions in the American Landscape (NDAL) summer event series. Their lecture reviewed the collaborative design process between ecologists and landscape architects. Barbara and Steven, an acclaimed restoration ecologist, have collaborated on numerous projects over the last 10 years. Public landscapes increasingly attempt to join ecological improvements to the practical, aesthetic, and cultural aspects of their landscape enhancements. The lecture covered a series of public park projects where ecological structure and function was a significant part of the design vocabulary, followed by an interactive discussion on the nuts and bolts of their eco-design collaboration.
