Sugar Hill Community Partners presented their vision of the Historic Gas Plant District to community members on January 4th, 2023. Sugar Hill’s presentation was one of four the community heard at the public meeting. W served as the landscape architect for the team, working closely with Perkins Eastman to envision a revitalization of the once lively, Black neighborhood, Sugar Hill, including a new park space utilizing Booker Creek as a spine, a new public green space converting the historic Oaklawn Cemetery to a forecourt for the proposed Museum of African American Heritage, and plenty of shade providing palm trees throughout the development.
Sugar Hill’s full proposal is available on St. Petersburg website, along with the other proposals. Mayor Ken Welch of St. Petersburg is expected to make a decision on the future of the Historic Gas Plant District in late January.
