Our design for Blue Pier is rooted in joining the ecology, local culture, and the history of the pier. By weaving together two systems—upland lagoons and an extended pier—we created a new ecology in the city with more diverse landscapes and experiences. Extending the pier inland and replacing existing lawns and trees with a series of lagoons and coastal landscapes provides a setting for learning, enjoyment, and increased interaction with the water. This diverse ecology will also help improve water quality in the north boat basin through increased flushing. Sequenced along a shaded walkway, visitors will encounter splash pads, places for viewing sea life, boating docks, pile fields, and snack bars and bait shops. The end of the pier features a dramatic sloping lawn topped with a cantilevered canopy, the underside of which forms a large media display: the Marine Screen of Underwater Life.
