“Restaurant Row has a very strong historical character, but as Eight and Ninth avenues became more lively themselves it lost its identity,” said Barbara Wilks of W Architecture and Landscape Architecture, which designed the kiosks together with the graphic design firm Doyle Partners.
While the kiosks aren't intended to be “blatantly historic,” Ms. Wilks said the cutout lights in the metal bases are intended to reference theatre lights and both those and the lights in the sidewalks are designed to be eye-catching for pedestrians.”
