June 8th is World Ocean’s Day!
As the World Ocean’s Day organization says “there is no environmentalism, biodiversity protection, or climate justice without social justice.” The organization also recognizes that the “Health crisis, climate crisis, racial crisis – they are all interconnected challenges of our present. Social justice and environmental justice are inextricable values that can only be achieved together,” and “Only together, with mutual respect for the diversity of human, plant, and animal life can we create a better, more just and sustainable home for all.” W supports the intertwined causes of social and environmental justice for all, and are committed to fighting for both to make this a better world.
Seventy percent of the earth’s surface is covered by ocean. Leading scientists worldwide have determined that we need to protect at least 30% of the planet’s ocean by 2030. World Ocean’s Day is passionate about the ocean and is a growing collaborative with a global network in 140 countries empowered by a Youth Advisory Council. In honor of the day, consider actions you can take to save the world’s oceans. Here are a few ways to help: sign the 30×30 petition, attend a World Ocean’s Day event, or participate in Plastic Free July.
