2023 Calgary Bioblitz – 433 Species Found!

St Patrick’s Island has nearly doubled the number of species discovered over a 10-year period, from 258 to 433! Over the 7-year period since the Island’s opening nearly 200 new species have taken up residence on the island. The updated species count was determined through a 24-hour Bioblitz counting the number of species present on St. Patrick’s Island. The event was a huge success thanks to the work of Dr. Steven Handel, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, and many volunteers who continuously worked to count species over a 24-hour period. This is the second Bioblitz held on St. Patrick’s Island. The previous Bioblitz was conducted in 2013 before the revitalization of St. Patrick’s Island led by W.
