The West Wharf Waterfront, located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is now open to the public. Linking West Street to the water via a broad tree-lined passageway, the site terminates in an overlook to the river with sweeping views of Lower Manhattan. The shore public walkway includes a variety of overlooks and loops through areas of native vegetation and lawns. The shore public walkway also defines the eastern edge of a new beach, which is accessible to all via a ramp. The upland area of the site references the site’s history as the location of the building of the steel ship, The Monitor. A special garden of crushed porcelain in the shape of the Monitor melds this industrial use with other uses, like a porcelain factory that occupied the site.
The waterfront is a key part of the first phase of the West Wharf development. Phases 2 and 3, also designed by W, are currently under construction.
